Bostir Rani Suriya (বস্তির রানি সোরিয়া)

 

Bostir Rani Suriya is a Bangladeshi film directed by Montazur Rahman Akbar. This film is mainly a lady action-based film and the writer and producer of this film is Dipjol. The leading casts of this film are Sadia Parveen Popi and Shakib Khan. This film was released in 15 November, 2004 and became a blockbuster but in 2005 it was banned by censor board.

 

The plot and setting of this film is like rest of the typical films produced in FDC. When I start to watch the film it took a good exam of my  patience because the film is full of violence, soft porn with dirty songs, lots of rape scenes,  illogical depiction of women's empowerment with lots of melodramatic sequences, , irrational  dialogues and lots of unusual background sound as well as obviously so called police officers and mafias. It is my honest confession that it took almost few days to complete watching the film.

When Suriya (Poppy) was very young she was raped by a boy of a local politician. She killed that boy and flee to the city. In the city she establishes a gang of women who fight for the rights of the girls in the city. Wherever there is a woman in distress they went there and help her out of the distress. Mishkatur Rahman (Shakib Khan) comes to the city to find a job and meets Suriya. After first meeting Suriya liked Mishkat very much and later falls in love with him. Mishkat also started love her back. They begin to work together to uproot evil from the society and restore peace.

 

Soft porn with songs, and rape scenes –

12	It is very tiring that we have to watch 5 rape scenes in one movie! Little Soriya was raped by a village boy and this scene was shown very descriptively.	(1:50:18-1:50:42)-

Violence-

01	The movie begins with a violent scene where Soriya fights against the bad boys who actually run after  trying to catch a girl. Whenever a girl falls in danger, she used to get the news in a telepathic way! She comes and saves the girl.	(40s-2:22)
02	The entry scene of Shakib is full of violence. He fights against the culprit who are actually engaged with stealing government relief. He revolts against the chairman of his village.	(3:3:54)
03	Soriya fights against the group of the son of a MP. Then she takes him to the MP's house and gives him a open threat and of course we see irrational representation of women in whole scene.	(7:30-10:40)
04	Iqbal Tarashi breaks both hands and legs of one guy who is engaged with drug smuggling. The thing is no matter how brutal the violence is, the director wants to depict Tarashi as a good man who can be so brutal for doing good deeds. Few seconds earlier when Shakib’s mother talk about Tarashi she mainly talks about Tarashi's violence	(13:01-13:32)-.
05	In this sequence Tarashi attempts to murder his wife and press her neck so hard.	(14:26-15:10)-
06	Soriya fights against Raja Tarashi and his guys. It is very astonishing to watch that a girl fights against 5/6 guys and win!	(39:04-41:41)-
07	Soriya engaged with fighting against Kabila who wants to rape her then Shakib comes and save Soriya. Though the main character played by Popy, Shakib becomes her savior this time.	(54:47-56:41)
08	Within this time Shakib slaps Popy for her ugly speech. The director depicts this scene in such a way where a boy can easily hurt a girl physically.	(1:4:30-1:4:58)
09	Raja raped his paternal cousin and killed her piercing a knife into the girls’ stomach. As like typical bengali movies, police come into the spot after the violence occurred. ( প্লিজ আমাকে নষ্ট করবেন না)  We hear this dialogue from the victim.	(1:07:28-1:8:57)
10	Raja Tarashi tries to shoot his own brother.	(1:12:25-1:14:20)
11	The opponent group of Tarashi try to kill him by shooting randomly.	(1:17:12-1:17:47)
12	Soriya fights against the rapist who raped a slum girl. Then police came and hurt Soriya to take her custody.	(1:38:20-1:39:43)
13	Raja tries to rape Soriya, at this moment Mishkat(Shakib) comes and fights against Raja in a brutal manner and save Soriya.	(1:43:12-1:44:23)

17	At the very last violent scene, we see Raja Tarashi along with other cadres come to kill his own brother. They engaged with firing randomly against one another. Killing people is like a daily routine and normal here.	(2:06:42-2:11:20)

 

Irrelevant talks and unusual background sound-

Whenever Soriya comes into the screen, in background sound we hear the vocal of some guys singing weirdly ‘He Soriya' ‘Soriya’ Soriya…

In every romantic scene some dirty sounds which is similar with pornography are played in this movie. The sounds were like Wuff, Oh, Ah, yeah etc.

Whenever violent scenes are come, the background sounds are played very noisy and ridiculous. Almost in every mainstream bengali film, these sounds are used.

03	This part is full of irrelevant dialogues and slangs. “রেপ কেস, জামিন নাই চৌদ্দ বছর, মাতারির পোলা,নাটকির পুত, মান্দার পো। The thing is that Soriya plays the the character of a revolting women, how can she use slang which actually make women silly.	(7:30-10:40)
04	Tarshi enters into his house along with two prostitutes in front of his wife. This sequence is totally rubbish because in our society no one will do this type of deeds but hidden.	(14:26-14:55)
05	We observe some extremely irrelevant talks from different characters. “ঢাকায় থাকলে ঢাইলও খাইবি, চিনিও খাইবি) ।  Here, Tarashi says that “ঘুষ না খাইলে ফুস হয়ে যাবি গা, ঘুষ না খাইলে চাকরি থাকে না, ঘুষ না দিলে চাকরিও হয় না”। My concern is that Tarashi depicts as an honest man. How can he talk like this?	27:10-27:18)
06	“রুবী তুই মরেছিস রে” said by the journalist to herself named Ruby.	(42:58-43:9)
07	Within this time, we see lots of Over acting and melodrama. Soriya puts her hand on her private parts every now and then when she talks with the slum girls as well as Mishkat.	(51:24-51:49)
08	The consumerism of alcohol is shown as normal but in our country the scenario is totally opposite. “বাঘ কাঁচা মাংস ভালোবাসে” this type of double meaning dialogue was used in the time of drinking.	(53:10 & 1:16;15)
09	When Mishkat slaps Soriya, she says “তুই আমারে থাপ্পড় মারলি? কোন অধিকারে মারলি? তুই কি আমার ভাতাড়? If Mishkat was her husband, the hurting of a women is legal. This is seriously ridiculous. Furthermore, Mishkat tells her that by indicating her body that her clothes is the main problem of eve teasing.	(56:28-56-57)
10	Tarashi says his dumb wife “আয়েশা ওরে বাইরে যাইতে কও”. He knows that Ayesha cannot talk then how she can tell Raja that he should leave the place. Next, Soriya along with slum girls enters into the hospital carrying Rifles! It is so unusual that some can enter a hospital with taking a gun.	(1:19:31-1:21:11)
11	Soriya talks about his dream of establishing a building where the sound of Azan can be easily heard. Though Soriya does not lead a life of a pure Muslim she also wants to hear the sound of Azan clearly. Actually, her purpose to serve the depiction of common moderate Muslim who is simultaneously corrupted and a pious person.	(1:5303- 1:53:15)

 

 Finally, I would like to say that this movie is a mainstream Bengali movie which is full of irrational representation of women, soft porn, violence, unusual background sounds and of course illogical dialogues.

 

Durdhordho Pamela (দুধর্ষ পামেলা)

This movie was directed by Jakirullah Jakir. Miss Pamela is the main character and also the villain of this movie. She is the eldest daughter of land lord of Kashipur village or area .

The movie is female dominated. Leading Female character is presented in a negative way who is actually villain of this movie.She was first introduced as the poisonous blood of the zamindar dynasty .She  played the role  using the shadow of male dominance ! Land grabbing, keeping terrorist forces, force someone to be loved, political murder, suppression of rebels these are basically men's work.

Her threat to all – “when someone looks up at me I take off his eyes, if someone walks in front of me with shoes on, I cut off his leg” when someone speaks on my face I pull his tongue out“if I don't get your love, I will force you to suffer” these words seem to be the roar of men in our society.

Even though she was a woman, her attitude towards women was quite disgusting! She raped and killed a girl at his wedding with her own thugs.She tortured the same woman twice,cut her hair and force her to dance in public. There was no shortage of violence against women from one-woman Miss Pamela! She was not behind in male torture-she killed several mens using gun and sword! Movie’s hero tourtured by her in police station,public and her own house!she killed his elder brother for raising their voice against her .

 

Miss Pamela as well as the police officer have harassed the women enough. The police officer have played the role of flatterers in power. The police officer felt quite comfortable talking indecently to more than one girl at the police station. He killed more than 5 man who were innocent. It highlights our recent condition extrajudicial killings by police force.

 

In this movie there are so many common things that repeated in every bangla film. Love between  rich and poor .At first heroine refused hero then someone try to rape her and hero fights them  and saves her. After all of this she falls for the hero! Corrupted police and they are doing everything in term of getting paying off from rich! And all of the action scene has become illogical. All the actor & actress used to deliver dialogue in local language or tone.

 

The main premise of this movie the tyrant oppresses the poor, torturing women, abuse of power and misrule of law but lead by a female character Miss pamela! This movie has presented women with contempt. It reflects our social conditions. But there is no message from this kind film.

The movie "Lady Rongbaz" is dominated by women. It is true that women have dominated in the movie, but that woman has been portrayed in a very violent way.

In the movie, the heroine calls herself "Lady Rongbaz" because the movie shows that her father was an honest police officer. Who is the name of the one who has dominated the smugglers K.D and his accomplices murdered the heroine's father OC Hasan Saheb and drove his wife out of the police quarters with various slanders. To avenge all that, the heroine developed herself as a "Lady Rongbaz".

This is where the story of the movie begins. At first everything was transparent but in many places in the movie the story is opaque. I will come back to that a little later.

Throughout the movie, violence, bad gestures, bad camera angles, and women's empowerment are misrepresented.

Many of the movie songs and scenes are imitations of foreign movies. What else can I say about the lyrics of the song. The language of the song is one way, and the gesture of the song is another way. For example, if you watch the song "সামনে বিপদ, পেছনে বিপদ", you will not think that there is any danger in it. There are only bad gestures and today's bad camera angles showing the sexual part and the melody of the song is a copy of foreign movies.

 

The heroine (Moonmoon) kills all the killers of her father using the son (Amin Khan) of Sadeq Sikder (his father's killer). The murder scene begins with Mushtaq Ahmed (one of the biggest smugglers in Bangladesh). Then she pretends to be the lost daughter of Zulmat Ali (another killer of the heroine's father) and kills Kader Mandal (the killer of the heroine's father), then she kills Zulmat Ali and finally Sadeq Sikder. It is important to know that Sadeq Sikder's son helped his father to be killed.

The whole movie has a view that revenge for murder must be done by killing. The heroine's mother, Sadeq Sikder's wife (the heroine's made mother) and a detective friend of Hasan Saheb (the heroine's father) incited her to commit those murders. And in the end the protagonist himself helps his father to be murdered. From this I hope it is understood at what stage the violence in the movie has taken shape.

I said that many of the stories in the movie are opaque because the fact that a wife can kill her husband and a boy can help her father is not analyzed in the movie. And KD basically killed the heroine's father, after killing so many, the movie ends without killing that KD.

Throughout the movie, the empowerment of girls has been misrepresented. The girls have been misrepresented. Girls are considered a commodity and a sexual part. After all, watching the whole movie, it is understood that a girl kills the murderers to avenge her father's murder, that is the story of the movie. Besides, there are no special story, but a lot of wrong messages have been given, which I think will create a kind of violence among those who watch this movie.

 

Finally, the main audience of these kinds of films are from both the cities and villagers who ate actually day labor, rickshaw puller, garments workers etc. They actually enjoy the film from their hurt and their mind set up was ready for these types of film. Nowadays, these types of films become flopped due to technological advancement. People can easily watch these type of movie, soft porn even porn. But in previous time these types of movies became blockbuster.
